In like a lion...

I can't believe February is almost over. March 11 is the 6 month mark in the wedding countdown. We still need a cake, I need to finish the match boxes, Ryan and I need to register, and many other details need to be addressed.

This week Ryan and I attempted to apply for new passports. The photos were taken, applications filled out, and we were on our way to the post office. No where on the application did it tell the applicant how much the fee for a new passport is. It only said to include the fee. Ryan and I made out the checks to the Department of Sate, dated and signed them, then asked the postal worker how much the fee is. He told us it's 75 dollars. Fine. We bought some stamps, bought some envelopes, and moved over to the lobby area to get it all together. I triple checked to make sure all our materials were together, and the applications, passports, and checks were separated correctly by name. I realized I left my pen at the desk, went and got it. Then Ryan noticed the envelopes would be pretty heavy. I went back and bought 2 17 cent stamps. We addressed the envelopes, wrote the return addresses, and then dropped them in the mail slot.

Done. Did you notice anything I left out? Neither did we, until about 9:30pm. Ryan was on the phone with his mom and mentioned we mailed out our applications and they were 75 dollars each. "Oh no!!!!" I gasped and them mouthed to Ryan that we forgot to fill out the checks!

So here we are. 2 blank checks are on their merry way to the Department of State with our passports, and all the personal information an identity theif could want. I called the passport office and "Mark" said they will probably just be mailed back. Lets hope so.

Also this week I took a little time to make earings out of sea glass my mom and I found up in Ashtabula about 10 years ago! Here is my first attempt at using jewelry wire:

Week in review

It's Friday! This week want pretty smoothly. With lots of help from my mom, the invitations arrived, napkins, and an engagement portrait was ordered. Speaking of wedding items, I was looking through dresses on the Alfred Angelo site (shame on me, I already have one!) and I found a dress that I really liked. Dress envy! I've heard of the dreaded "dress envy" on many a forum, but always thought it would never happen to me. I showed it to Mom and she said she like's mine much better...and I'm pretty sure I do also. I think the one I have is more "me."

At the psychiatric hospital on Monday I was assigned to the Adult unit again. A patient still there from the week before remembered me. He is going through a manic-phase of psychosis. The week before he gave me the nickname "Casper." He said it's because I'm friendly, but I think its because I'm pale. It's interesting that his general speech and language can be so coherent, yet the subjects and content of what he is saying can be so off-the-wall.

Thursday was my first day of OB clinical. I was really hoping to see a vaginal delivery, but I all got to see was a circumcision.

Valentine's Day

Today at work a resident had an old skin tear open up and had dried blood on his hands at the breakfast table. While I was cleaning him up I told him it "Looks like the St. Valentine's Day Massacre over here!" He wasn't amused, but I got a kick out of it - I mean, it's Valentine's Day, come on!

Ryan went into the lab to work on some things for his upcoming practical. Afterwords he went to the gym while I went grocery shopping. When we got back I gave him a much-needed hair cut in the bath tub (which is now clogged).

We had a tasty dinner at Ted's Montana Grill, it's our favorite special occasion spot. Hope everyone had a great Valentine's Day!

Cake pops!

I found these adorable "cake pops," and had to try to make them right away. They really didn't turn out well, but I had a (rushed) fun time making them. Don't think I'll be doing these for the shower, I'd really need to perfect them first. My candy coating wasn't smooth, and the edible markers I bought barely write on the candy. I'm sending 4 of the least dud-like ones to school with Ryan tomorrow to share. The thing is, despite how mine look - they taste great!!!!

I used toilet paper to stand them in to dry - I was not paying 4 bucks for a block of Styrofoam at JoAnn's!

Parents visit and snow out the wazoo

On Wednesday, I had the pleasure of welcoming my Mom and Step-Dad to Columbus until Friday. The arrived about 30 minutes before I was done with lecture at school, so they came to the school and sat in on the class! Greg was annoyed that the instructor just read straight off the PowerPoint. Welcome to my life every Wednesday, Greg.

After class we went to Easton to return a "Mother of the Bride" dress at Nordstrom. We grabbed a bite to eat at Cosi, and my mom bought some loose tea at Teavana. Next we checked in at the Quality Inn near my apartment, and hang around til it was time for dinner with Ryan at Pei Wei. Ryan had a fever, he got the cold that I had last week.

After Pei Wei we dropped Ryan off and got some gelato at Whole Foods.

I slept at the hotel, which I wouldn't have missed because Greg was quite the comedian that night, and in the morning we had Belgian waffles and coffee before heading out to Half-Price Books. My mom bought some magazines and a book about the Appalachian Trail.

We walked over to Petland so Greg could check out the fish. There was some kind of colorful tropical bird on a branch inside, and Greg got it to walk onto his finger. My mom kept insisting that I put my finger under its chest. I did, finally, and it bit me! Hard! I moved on to the puppies and held a cute pomeranian. I brought it onto the area where you can set it down and play with it, and it immediatlly took a hold of my pant leg and started violently shaking it and growling. I gave it back. Just when we were ready to leave, the staff brought the resident tortoise out from his bath. He had a spongebob helium baloon taped to his shell. He made a bee-line for his food bowl that was piled with what looked like romaine lettuce. Greg ended up down on one knee feeding this huge tortoise by hand for a few minutes. It was sute - I wish I had the camera.

Next we headed to Penzy's Spices where my mom treated me to a bag of cinnamon chunks which we split (we put them in tea and coffee).

We walked across the parking lot to Patel Bros. and picked up a big bag of cumin, a bag of chili powder, and a bag of corn meal at great prices.

The it was time for lunch, so we went down to OSU's campus and had lunch in the Med Center at Wendy's. We walked over to the amazing new library and marveled at the view from the top floor, and at the grand reading room.

We walked back over to Postle Hall where dear Future Husband was in lab working on a cavity prep. We were able to poke into the lad and see him for a minute.

Next, Greg dropped off my mom and I at the apartment and we had tea with cinnamon and watched a couple Seinfeld episodes. Then it was back to the hotel to change and get ready to meet Ryan at Hoggy's for dinner.

Hoggy's was alright, nothing to write home about (or blog about for that matter.) After dinner my mom and I headed over to LifeTime at Easton for a DanceJam class, they were also taking donations for Hati relief.

We danced for about an hour and came back to the hotel for bed.

The next morning we had more waffles and coffee. The snow started as we were finishing up. We stopped at Target for some mascara, earplugs, and vitamins, and than it was time to say goodbye. It really was a great visit and I can't wait til the next one!

The snow continued for the rest of the night. At about 8pm Ryan and I trekked to the dumpster to take out the trash. We played in the snow for a while after that, building a snow woman that Ryan has since named Harriet. We also brushed off a few of the cars in the lot just to be good neighbors.

While I was snacking on snowballs, Ryan ran and got the camera. I attempted to take an action shot of him leap-frogging over our statue, but instead, he knocked off Harriet's shoulders and landed on his face in the snow...then the flash went off.

Columbus got at least 12 inches, and it seems like very few people are out on the roads today.

Autism

This week, instead of going to Children's Hospital, I had the opportunity to go off site to their Autism Clinic. I met a nurse there who has a 6 year old with autism. She gave me some information about a short program to become eligible to provide aide as part of behavioral intervention for her daughter at home as a second small job, maybe one day a week. The funding that she recieves would pay for the program.

I have the brocure to look over, as well as her e-mail address and phone number. It's something to look into, but I really have to see if it is right for me.

The Autism Clinic is very interesting. Children come in and are evaluated by a speech therapist, a psychologist, and a medical doctor. 2 children I observed today are on their way to an ADHD diagnosis. I saw one child who had already been diagnosed with autism.
